In order to encourage architects to use their imagination and limit monotony, in 1898 the Paris city council set up an annual competition awarding six medals; three buildings with caryatids were thus prize winners: at 116 rue Réaumur in 1898, at 48bis rue de Rivoli in 1905 and at 199 rue de Charenton in 1911.
